Chameleon diamonds – one of the rarest gemstones on earth and one of the least known diamond colours. They are the only diamond that can transform between varying shades of luminous green, brown, and yellow. Fascinating connoisseurs around the world, this rare gem has the exceptional ability of temporarily changing its colour after prolonged storage in the dark or heating at an approximate temperature of 150°C. Compared to its more well-known counterparts including white and other coloured diamonds, chameleon diamonds have remained beyond the limits of popular conception. Chameleon diamonds are distinguished from other green diamonds by an essentially distinctive nature and a subtle mix of secondary hues ranging from grey, brown to yellow.
The Science of Chameleon Diamonds
Representing a fraction of coloured diamonds, chameleon diamonds havegradually been garnering recognitionamong enthusiasts and common buyers as well. An unusual discovery, this remarkable gemstone adapts to the changing environment around it. No wonder, it remains a mystifying phenomenon in the world of gemstones and a highly sought-after choice to connoisseurs and investment collectors.
It is still scientifically unknown as to why chameleon diamonds can change colour but there are certain features that are present in all Chameleon diamonds. There must be a high fluorescence in the stone and they must have a combination of colour tones, typically appearing in the lighter colour range of shades of greyish-green or olive green, they morph into an array of shades spanning the brown tinges of the spectrum to intense yellow. The diamond’s colour will change when kept in the dark for long periods of time or when the diamond is heated to between 150-250 degrees. The diamond will shift its colour from it usual greenish state to an orangey-yellow or brilliant yellow. However, the change of colour is generally temporary as the diamond gradually reverts to its natural green if exposed to daylightoras it cools down.
Chameleon Diamond Jewellery: Intriguing and Exquisite
Thanks to this exceptional quality, chameleon diamonds are particularly rare and therefore extremely precious. There are only a few large documented stones in this category. The magnificent shade and clarity, together with its inherent dispersion (fire) lends an inimitable identity to chameleon diamonds in the crowded world of gemstones. The price for large diamonds can be quite considerable due to their absolute rarity. Smaller diamonds are more affordable and are based on the size and shape of the gemstone.
