What is an International Diamond Certificate?

A diamond certificate is an independent (often non-profit) diamond grading assessment of an individual diamond that is provided by an internationally industry approved diamond grading laboratory. The laboratory will inspect a diamond up to three times by different individuals using the highest standard diamond grading equipment to test the diamond’s carat weight, colour, clarity and most importantly the cut quality of the diamond. A diamond grading certificate is what gives a diamond its worth, without a certificate you are relying on only the opinion of the seller as to the assumed grade and quality of the diamond. As most people purchasing a diamond do not have the skills or equipment to grade a diamond themselves, the international diamond certificate summarises the diamond’s quality in an easy understand format. In the current market almost all diamonds above 0.25ct have been certified and the certification number is often engraved into the girdle of the diamond for full security. If a diamond above 0.75ct does not have a genuine international diamond certificate then caution should be taken with its purchase as it can be considered that it is of a lower possible cut and the grading less accurate.

The most common and probably the only certificates that you should accept in Australia are GIA, HRD, IGI, AGS, DCLA, ADGL.

It is important to understand that a diamond certificate is not a valuation, a diamond certificate only provides an assessment on the quality of the diamond and does not provide a price for the diamond.

Why is a Diamond Grading Certification so Important?

Certification has existed for high quality diamonds as a standard expectation only since early 2000 and now plays a very important roll when selecting a diamond. The modern techniques used for cutting a diamond are now so skilled that manufactures can easily cut a perfectly proportioned diamond but unfortunately not all diamond can be cut to perfect proportions.  A diamond’s cut is what provides its sparkle and ultimately its worth.  To assign a diamond its value a diamond needs to be accurately graded, which can only be identified by the diamond having an independent diamond certificate.

A quality diamond should always be supplied along with an internationally accredited diamond certificate. Without the backing of the certification the quality of a diamond cannot be assured and it can be impossible to determine the value of the diamond. Diamonds supplied with certification provide a very accurate grading report of the diamond, which values the diamond and make is very easy to compare diamonds when selecting one to purchase. However reading a certificate requires a good understand of diamond grading and knowing the difference between different certifiers. To accurately select a diamond from certification requires a very good understanding of diamond grading and enlisting the help of an industry expert is the best recommendation.
Buying certified diamonds through a Brisbane supplier means that you have the security of an industry expert who is also bound by the local government regulatory sales requirements. This means that if there is any issue with the purchase you can deal with the business directly who will correct the problem without risk to yourself.

Not all International Certification is The Same

Although most high quality diamonds will now be provided with an international diamond certificate it is also important to choose the right certification laboratory. There are several major international certification laboratories who operate in several counties and probably certify around 80% of all certified diamonds. However, not all international certification is graded to the same set of industry standards. Each of the certification laboratories grade by their own set of scientific standards, which requires the help of an industry expert when trying to select the right diamond.

For 100% satisfaction any high-end retail store should provide all of their diamonds with a reputable, leading independent diamond certifier such as GIA, IGI, HRD or AGS to ensure the client is getting exactly what they ordered. Diamond Brokers Queensland believe that for a diamond to be given the highest possible grading and the highest possible value, a GIA certified diamond has the highest reputation. If you wish to purchase a true ideal cut diamond that is perfectly cut in every way then GIA is the best selection. There are still other very good certifiers who grade to similar standards but just do not quite hold the same reputation as the GIA brand, AGS, HRD, IGI, DCLA and ADGL all grade to a similar standard but the top tier diamonds do not hold the same value as that of GIA.

One other commonly found certificate is the EGL certification which has a completely different set of grading standards and although will be better than a non certified diamond the grading standard of this laboratory is well below that of the above certifiers. Generally an “Excellent” grade EGL diamond is equivalent to a “Good” grade GIA and so is the price. Unless you are looking for a lower value stone that sounds good on paper an EGL and any other non-recognised certifiers should be purchased with great caution.
