Of all the fancy coloured diamonds the yellow diamond is the most accessable and affordable. Yellow diamonds are one of the more beautiful coloured diamonds with great intensity and clean even colours. This colour is created when trace elements of Nitrogen are trapped within the diamond during formation. Nitrogen is the most common trace element found in diamonds but only a very small number of diamonds with a yellow tint are considered to be of fancy yellow grade by GIA.
Purchasing a fancy yellow diamond is quite different to buying a white diamond where there is greater emphasis on the colour rather than the cut and clarity of the diamond. Yellow diamonds are readily available in very good variety of high quality shapes and colours as the supply tend to be very similar to the demand. This fortunately makes buying a yellow diamond similar in price to purchasing a white diamond unlike the other more rare fancy coloured diamonds.
How to select what colour grade yellow Diamond
Selecting the colour grade of your fancy yellow diamond is the most important aspect of purchasing a fancy coloured diamond. Colour is a personal preference and there is no incorrect choice but it is important to understanding the difference in appearance so that you can know how to select what colour grade diamond will be the most appropriate. The price of yellow diamonds will vary considerably depending on the grade chosen more than any other aspect of the diamond. You need to take in to account your budget and the desired size and shape, this will often automatically put you into a specific colour range then you can make realistic adjustment from there as to your preferred selection.
Fancy Intense yellow diamonds
The midway grade for fancy yellow coloured diamonds is fancy intense yellow. We find this grade is the most desirable for people wishing to purchase a brightly coloured fancy yellow diamond, this grade is often also referred to as a canary yellow diamond. The canary yellow or fancy intense yellow diamonds are a little more expensive than the standard fancy grade but are still good value for an exceptional looking diamond. The fancy and fancy light yellow diamonds tend to have a very pleasant but slightly more transparent yellow colour to what most people would expect but are very affordable and can be enhanced by setting them in yellow gold. Fancy vivid yellow diamonds are very deep and rich in colour and look magnificent but tend to become much more expensive and can often incorporate other secondary colours.
Secondary colours in yellow diamonds
As fancy coloured diamonds are a natural formation many diamonds also contain one or more secondary colours which although unusual can form an interesting combination.
Yellow coloured diamonds are often only seen in pure yellow but they can often be found with tones of orange, green, brown and blue. These undertones are usually considered undesirable and reduce the price of the diamond compared to a pure yellow diamond. However the price is determined by desirability and some colour combinations can produce some very attractive colours.
