The History of the Argyle Diamond Mine
Discovered in the remote East Kimberly region of Western Australia, commercial production commenced in 1983. The Argyle pink diamond is a pure treasure that helped launch the awareness of fancy coloured diamonds from the rare collectors market to the general public of the world.
The Argyle Diamond Mine was the only significant Producer of Pink Diamonds
Pink diamonds from the Argyle mine make up around 90% of all pink diamonds mined in the world and are distinguishable by a colour that has a depth and strength that has rarely been seen from any previous pink diamond source in the world. The relative rarity of pink diamonds is why they command such a high price with only around 100 carats of significantly sized diamonds released to the market each year making them one of the world’s most exclusive products.
Certification History of Australian Pink Diamonds
From their initial release into the general market the Argyle diamond mine has continually had to increase the certification and chain of custody quality and verification to adjust to market demands and values.
From the first year of production the major diamond tender was released to invitees to bid in a blind auction for the best pink diamonds produced by the mine.
For the first 10-15 years of production the majority of the general pink diamond production was sold to DeBeers and not released with any mine verification. The diamonds from this era are in the public domain with little verification but can be reassessed by authorised certifiers to identify their origin but not the original grading.
The first official general pink diamond certificates for diamonds over 0.20ct in weight were released in 2005 with laser inscription but there were also certificates issued for individual stones as early as 1995 without laser inscription.
In 2009 the certificate style was upgraded and issued for diamond 0.15ct and above. The certificate appearance has been changed several times over the years and in 2016 the decision was made to include diamonds down to the weight of 0.08ct.
Almost all diamond certificates issued by the Argyle diamond mine can be verified online on the official Argyle website. There are still a small number of certificates and diamonds with laser inscriptions that do not appear on the website but this is not a concern.

Chain of Custody
The Argyle diamond mine chain of custody has be a verification method used for each parcel of similar small diamonds released to the pink diamond Partners and is verified through the invoice chain of authorised sellers. There was not a set of certificates released for these diamond parcels but many of the resellers have produced their own certificate to provide with the Lot number allocation.

Increased Price Of Pink Diamonds
With the closing of the Argyle diamond mine in 2020 and the loss of supply of these precious gems, there was a sharp increase in the price as buyers looked to purchase the final production. This adjustment was purely due to the closure but the market and has now steadied back to a regular growth pattern as old diamonds re-enter the market to create continued trading.

12 Carat Pink Diamond Discovered At The Argyle Mine In 2012
In 2012 Argyle discovered their largest ever rough pink diamond at 12 carats. Unfortunately, after much deliberation in the cutting process, it was determined that due to a major inclusion a single diamond would not be possible and rather than creating a twin pair the partially polished diamond was donated to the Melbourne Museum for a display for future generations.

Colour Variety in Diamonds from the Argyle Mine

Buying a Pink Diamond from the Argyle Diamond Mine
Unlike white diamonds pink diamonds are extremely limited in supply and finding a match for your requirements can often be very difficult. When looking to buy a pink diamond you must be willing to accept the closest possible match to your requirements as finding the exact diamond that you want to buy can often be nearly impossible. The key to buying a pink diamond from the Argyle mine is to understand your budget and what it will achieve for you in terms of size, colour, and clarity grade.
Australian Origin Pink Diamonds
Any intense or vivid natural pink diamonds in Australia are going to predominantly be of Argyle origin but for certainty, new diamonds should always come with an Australian Argyle origin certificate and laser inscription for the greatest security and assurance with your purchase. Many older pink diamonds will only have loose traceability as they were released prior to the origin certification which means they will never have the same certainty and value but are still an attractive option in the rarest qualities and will often have a GIA certificate instead. Not only is Argyle the major producer of pink diamonds but they also unearth a quality that is a richer and deeper colour than found anywhere else and with the mine nearing the end of its commercial life the availability of new pink diamonds is going to almost stop. There are natural pink diamonds found in other parts of the world but not with any consistency and are rarely found with the colour intensity of those found at Argyle.
What is the Price of Pink Diamonds?
Although people generally know that pink diamonds are more expensive than white diamonds, why is the price of pink diamonds so expensive? A top-quality pink diamond will be between 50-100 times the price of a standard white diamond and considering that a pink diamond is around one million times rarer, the price can be considered quite reasonable. The price of pink diamonds from the Argyle mine is primarily associated with the tone and saturation of the colour with the most intense being the most expensive. Even though pink diamonds come with an exclusive price tag the demand for the best of these gems exceeds their availability with high interest for luxury jewellery, investors and gem collectors.
