Tanzanite is a tricrotic gem that will show blue, green and violet through the different crystal plains when held against polarised light. When mined from the ground the rough crystal is often a pale greyish green but when exposed to heat either underground or after it has been mined will turn the crystal a deep violet blue. Smaller gems are a lighter medium-grade colour of a lavender violet to medium blue colour with larger stones allowing for the deeper royal blues and premium AAA colour grade stones generally being over 2ct to create the depth required.
