The Different Types of Tourmaline
- Rubellite Tourmaline – deep pink to reddish-purple
- Indicolite Tourmaline – Deep Blue – from navy and royal blues with a touch of violet, green or indigo
- Paraiba Tourmaline – a special variety of neon blue, green and indigo from Brazil that can often be highly included but the colour is so impressive that they command exceptional prices.
- Watermelon Tourmaline – pastel pink blended into green
- Chrome Tourmaline – An intense vibrant green that was originally mistaken for emerald
Paraiba Tourmaline
The highest value tourmaline with a neon blue/green colour to beat all other gems. Found initially in Brazil as well as Nigeria and Mozambique its colour is derived from elements of copper and manganese that create its uniquely mesmerising colour. Most gem-quality tourmalines are eye-clean but with the price and rarity of Paraiba, many gems are highly included which is quite acceptable and actually gives the gems a nice character.

Why is Tourmaline Not More Popular?
In the world of gemstones, tourmaline is well distributed around the world with good availability of high-quality large gems. However, not being a part of the well-known precious gem group and with so many colour variants, it is often mistaken for other gemstone varieties. It is also unfortunate that most chain store jewellers are reluctant to stock or promote them for sale unless a particular colour becomes trendy for a period.
Most buyers will simply discover that the gem in the ring they choose is because of either the colour or the ring design that it happens to be a tourmaline. Colour is everything with this gem and can be purchased at an affordable price all the way up to very high prices for those exclusive colours.
For buyers who appreciate unique gems there is a colour of tourmaline for everyone but to find your ideal stone can require the assistance of a skilled merchant to help make your selection.
